10 Common Mistakes on the FIFA Agent Exam — And How to Avoid Them

September 21, 2026 · FIFA Agent Guide · 3 min read

Having analyzed the performance of candidates who prepared for the FIFA Agent Exam, consistent patterns emerge in how people fail. The same mistakes appear repeatedly — not because the exam is unfair, but because candidates make predictable errors in their preparation and exam technique. Here are the 10 most common mistakes and exactly how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Using the Wrong Manual Edition

The 2026 exam is based on the January 2026 manual. Candidates who study the 2025 edition will not know the September 2025 Disciplinary Code changes, the July 2025 RSTP updates, or the new Ethical Recruitment Guide. This alone accounts for 3-4 wrong answers for otherwise well-prepared candidates.

Mistake 2: Memorizing Without Understanding

The exam asks application questions, not memorization questions. Instead of 'what is the maximum commission?', it asks 'Agent A represents both the player and the club and charges 3% to each — is this compliant?' Understanding why rules exist helps you apply them correctly under exam pressure.

Mistake 3: Neglecting RSTP and Agent Regulations

These two subjects together account for 10-14 of the 20 questions. Candidates who distribute study time evenly across all 8 subjects arrive at the exam under-prepared in exactly the areas that matter most. RSTP and Agent Regulations deserve at least 50% of your total study time.

Mistake 4: Not Doing Mock Exams

Reading the manual builds knowledge. Mock exams build exam performance. These are different skills. Candidates who have never answered 20 questions in 60 minutes before exam day often run out of time or panic on difficult questions. Do at least 3 full mock exams before the real thing.

Mistake 5: Confusing Old and New Thresholds

The September 2025 Disciplinary Code changed specific numbers. Single judge jurisdiction: 5 matches (not 4). Fine for racism: CHF 5,000,000. Compliance re-evaluation: 6 months (not 3). If you know the old numbers from the 2023 Code, you will get these questions wrong unless you specifically update your knowledge.

Mistake 6: Skipping FIFA Guardian

Many candidates treat FIFA Guardian as a minor subject and barely study it. The addition of the Ethical Recruitment Guide in 2026 means this subject now has more examinable content than ever. At minimum, know the three Article 19 exceptions and the key principles of the Ethical Recruitment Guide.

Mistake 7: Not Reading Questions Carefully

Many exam questions contain a deliberate trap in the question stem — a negative ('which of the following is NOT correct'), a specific age threshold, or a precise timeline. Read every question twice before answering. This alone saves 1-2 points for most candidates.

Mistake 8: Leaving Questions Blank

The FIFA Agent Exam does not penalize wrong answers. There is no negative marking. If you are unsure, eliminate the obviously wrong options and make your best guess. A 50-50 guess gives you a 50% chance of a correct answer — much better than the guaranteed 0% of leaving it blank.

Mistake 9: Starting Preparation Too Late

The minimum effective preparation time for the FIFA Agent Exam is 6 weeks of focused study. Candidates who start 2-3 weeks before the exam consistently underperform, regardless of their background. The material is deep — 1,026 pages — and requires time to process and practice.

Mistake 10: Studying Alone Without Feedback

Reading the manual in isolation gives you exposure to the material but no feedback on whether you are understanding it correctly. Practicing with questions that have detailed explanations — and ideally, access to a coach who has passed the exam — dramatically accelerates your preparation and catches misconceptions before exam day.
